the IXth International Congress of Phoenician and Punic Studies will take place from October 22 until October 26, 2018, in Mérida (Extremadura/Spain), and will be organized by the Institute of Archaeology (CSIC- Junta de Extremadura). The Congress will be funded by the FEDER funds of the European Union through the General Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation of the Junta of Extremadura. The Municipality of Mérida has expressed its support for this initiative and has made the Palacio de Congresos de Mérida where the event will take place available to the organizers.
The choice of Mérida, the capital of the region where the Phoenician culture left a major imprint on the indigenous societies of the interior, implies that the Congress will dedicate special attention to the Phoenician impact on the peripheries of the Oecumene, and to recent investigations undertaken in the countries that had close links with Phoenician-Punic culture. In order to promote a dynamic dialogue between the various countries and the different schools, supra-regional themes with a diachronic vision will have an important place. For this reason the title of the Congress is A Journey Between the East and the West of the Mediterranean and its Peripheries.
